The Case of the Cooperative Siblings
Some mysteries are best solved by listening, not investigating.

In “The Case of the Cooperative Siblings,” young Berty’s quest for factual accuracy about sleep schedules soon becomes a lesson in trust. His investigation into his brother and sister’s unusual behaviour forces him to weigh his desire for answers against the importance of family harmony.

The Case of the Cooperative Siblings

The Morning Investigation

“Good morning, Mother,” Berty said, pulling out a chair at the breakfast table. Lydia set a plate down in front of him. “And a very good morning to you, Berty,” she replied, a chuckle in her voice.

“Is Zenny awake yet?” Berty asked, looking toward the hallway. “And where are Alphonso and Caitlin? They do know it’s 8 AM, even if it’s not a school day.” Lydia sighed lightly, pouring herself a cup of coffee. “Well, surprisingly, Alphonso and Caitlin are on their way into town to do some shopping. As for Zenny, she’s still fast asleep. I’m letting her lie in this morning.”

Berty frowned, pushing his plate away slightly. “Mother, did you know children shouldn’t sleep for more than ten hours a day? I think it’s time we woke up Zenny.” Lydia gave a gentle shake of her head. “I don’t think that’s a good idea, and no, I didn’t know that, Berty.” The investigation was set to begin.

Berty quietly ate a piece of toast, then slid off his chair and went straight to the hall cupboard. He retrieved his laptop from the storage drawer and placed it carefully on the dining table. He began his research by typing one question into the search bar: “How many hours should an 8-year-old sleep?” A moment later, his eyes widened slightly. He quickly copied the answer into his notebook.

The Early Morning Anomaly

“Mother! I have the facts!” he announced. “Experts recommend that children Zenny’s age need between nine and twelve hours of sleep every night. She went to bed at half-past seven. That means she has already had over twelve hours! She’s officially an over-sleeper!” Lydia smiled warmly at him. “Well done, Berty. You really are very thorough, but let’s not wake Zenny just yet.”

Creak… Creak… Just then, the stairs started creaking. Zenny finally made her entrance, blinking sleepily at the kitchen clock as she shuffled in. She arrived for breakfast at exactly 8:25 AM. Berty immediately pointed a triumphant finger toward his laptop screen. “Hey, Zenny, you overslept! Children your age shouldn’t be sleeping more than ten hours, according to me—even though the experts recommended nine to twelve hours.”

Zenny just looked on, rubbing her eye with the heel of her hand. “Good morning, Mother,” she mumbled. Then, she offered a slightly more cheerful, “Good morning, Berty.” Lydia quickly stepped in, placing a calming hand on Berty’s shoulder. “Let’s not discuss this at the moment, Berty. Maybe later. Now, how did you sleep, my gorgeous baby?” “Slept well, Mummy,” Zenny replied, already pouring cereal into a bowl.

The clock on the wall read exactly 8:50 AM when the loud, insistent doorbell rang. Before Lydia could even get up, the door burst open. Alphonso strode in, carrying a large brown paper bag, closely followed by Caitlin, who was balancing a multipack of crisp bags and a couple of large fizzy drinks. “We’re back!” announced Alphonso. Lydia stared. “That was fast. And you two went together?” Alphonso and Caitlin exchanged a quick, strange look.

Berty immediately noticed this exchange. He quickly flipped past the sleep facts in his notebook and grabbed his pen. Under a new heading—”The Town Trip Anomaly”—he made a single, underlined note: “Alphonso and Caitlin went shopping together and returned with snacks (Unusual Co-operation).”

The Anomaly Deepens

The older siblings immediately took their haul upstairs. They were back down five minutes later, both heading straight for the refrigerator. “Is breakfast ready yet, Mum?” Alphonso asked. “We worked up an appetite.” Berty saw his opportunity. “Alphonso, you overslept too! Teenagers need a significant amount of sleep, and Zenny slept for over twelve. How many hours did you and Caitlin sleep?”

Caitlin rolled her eyes affectionately. “Can’t you see I’m trying to eat, Berty? You are so cool with all your facts, but I didn’t sleep long. We can definitely talk about it later.” Alphonso ruffled Berty’s hair. “Yeah, kiddo. What Caitlin said.” Lydia stepped over to the stove to start eggs. “Berty, remember what we said earlier? We will discuss your findings later. Let the others eat in peace.”

Lydia watched him, a familiar smile playing on her lips. She was well aware that Berty was a meticulous boy who loved to know things and always wanted to discover the facts. “Oh, speaking of things that matter,” Lydia interrupted, giving Berty a quick, knowing wink, “don’t forget that my friend Delia is coming for our weekly tea and catch-up this Thursday. You all need to make sure your rooms are tidy by Wednesday evening. She’s bringing her famous lemon scones.”

Berty made a mental note of the Delia event, but his focus was on his investigation. With the official discussion now scheduled, he carefully gathered his materials and moved to his room—his Investigation Hub. He spent the next few hours cross-referencing sleep charts and printing a single, crisp sheet of paper: The Official Sleep Data Presentation.

The Presentation and Denial

At 3:45 PM, Berty sent a quick photo of his printed document to his friend. His phone buzzed immediately with the reply: Bernard: The Official Sleep Data Presentation looks great, Berty! Top-notch facts. See you at Lower Park on Monday morning at 8 AM sharp. Berty smiled. Now, he was ready.

It took a final, slightly exaggerated shout from Berty—“This is a matter of health and data integrity!”—but by 4:15 PM, the entire family was squeezed into the living room. Alphonso and Caitlin slouched on the sofa, munching on their snacks. Zenny sat cross-legged on the rug, already bored. Berty stood formally in the centre of the room, holding his printed sheet like a vital document.

“Thank you, family, for attending this Official Sleep Data Presentation,” Berty began, clearing his throat. “My investigation was prompted by excessive sleep duration. This is a clear sign of poor time management.” He pulled out the printed sheet. “Exhibit A shows that an eight-year-old requires between nine and twelve hours of sleep. Zenny, you slept for twelve hours and fifty-five minutes. That is a measurable oversleep.” He then turned to his older brother. “Which brings me to my secondary question: Alphonso and Caitlin. How many hours did you sleep? Your unexpected early morning shopping trip warrants a full sleep accounting.”

Alphonso and Caitlin exchanged that same strange look they had shared earlier. “Look, Berty,” Alphonso started, shifting uncomfortably on the sofa. “It’s really complicated, okay? We didn’t get much sleep at all.” Caitlin quickly jumped in. “We just wanted to get the good snacks before they ran out, Berty. Honestly, it was a totally normal morning. Just very early.” Berty narrowed his eyes, comparing their frantic denial to the note in his book. “I am recording this conflicting statement.”

Lydia stepped forward, sensing the atmosphere turning tense. “That’s enough, investigator,” she said, gently taking the notebook from his hand. “The facts are noted. Everyone needs different amounts of sleep. Now, let’s go outside; it’s a beautiful day.”

The Truth and Trust

That evening, as Berty got ready for bed, his focus wasn’t on sleep facts; it was on the Anomaly. Alphonso and Caitlin had avoided him all day, whispering and making mysterious trips outside. He heard the faint sound of a text notification coming from Alphonso’s closed room next door. Berty pulled out his notebook and flipped to the Town Trip Anomaly page. He added one final note: “Further evidence: Alphonso received a secret text message at 9:55 PM. The mystery is still open.”

The next morning, Berty found a small box on his desk. It was wrapped simply. A note was attached. For our favourite investigator. Maybe this case is closed. Love, A & C. Puzzled, Berty opened it. Inside was a new, high-quality notebook. Tucked in the front cover was a receipt from a homeware shop, dated the previous morning at 8:35 AM. The listed item was “Ceramic Teapot – Floral.”

Berty remembered. Their mother’s favourite teapot had a hairline crack. She had mentioned it weeks ago. He looked at the receipt again. The shopping trip, the unusual co-operation—it was not for snacks. It was for a gift for their mother. A replacement for her beloved teapot. They had kept it a secret to surprise her. He thought about their evasive answers. They were not being dishonest; they were protecting a kind act.

Berty felt a warm shame. He had been so focused on uncovering a lie that he had missed the truth of their kindness. He picked up his old notebook and turned to the Town Trip Anomaly page. He drew a large, careful line through all his notes. Below it, he wrote a new heading: “Case Conclusion: Misinterpreted Co-operation. The evidence points to a collective act of kindness. The investigation is hereby closed.” He placed the old notebook on a shelf and opened the new one to its first, clean page. Some mysteries, he thought, were better left as pleasant surprises.
